DELIGHTFUL LIVE REMAKE OF A DISNEY CLASSIC

Was, myself, brought up watching Disney classics such as the 1941 version ofDumbo....a movie that still has the charm today as it always has.Disney again revisiting an old favourite -The film receiving mixed responses from many critics, some saying despite its brilliant visual content it lacked the 'soul' brought to the screen of its 1941 original. All I can say having now watched it, is, see it for yourself, I believe the majority will love it.Returning to his family, Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) after the war (it's now 1919) with the loss of his left arm, he finds that his wife had died during a flu-epidemic, his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) had been cared for by his fellow circus family headed by friend and owner Max Medici (Danny De Vito)Holt, can no longer do the horseback entertainment he once did and is offered the job of caretaker. The circus has fallen on hard times, Max, looking for extra attractions had bought an elephant Jumbo who turns out to be pregnant.....well, when born a baby elephant would attract interest. However, when Jumbo Jnr arrives he has unusually large ears, Max isn't sure of its potential. However, Holt's children take to the young elephant and play with it, when taunting Jumbo Jnr with a feather the young elephant leaves the ground chasing it, when Milly and Joe try to tell their father what happened he, of course, dismisses it.However, the young elephant is introduced to the circus ring helping te clowns put out a staged fire but becomes trapped many feet above the stage, Milly climbs the ladder with a feather in hand, this tempts Jumbo Jnr now renamed Dumbo after an earlier incident to fly away from the danger.Meanwhile in an incident whereby mum Jumbo only protecting her child is seen as out of control and will be sold back to her previous owner, minus the young elephant of course.News travels fast, entrepreneur and theme-park owner V. A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) along with partner and trapeze artist Colette Marchant (Eva Green) turn up to see the spectacle for themselves.Vandevere soon offers Max a partnership and a home for his troupe, however, the entrepreneur only has his eye on the dollars young Dumbo can earn for him, and will not prove a reliable associate. At the theme park, it is discovered that Dumbo's mum is there, a chained-up attraction, Dumbo pines for the mother he'd been cruelly separated from, will they now be reunited? ....not if Vandevere has his way they won't.With much drama to come, will there be a happy ending for young Dumbo? An enjoyable watch that those remembering the charm of the original should avoid making comparisons.A truly great family watch - enjoy.

One to enjoy

This is an all round family film... the film that has a happy ending... and is safe to watch no matter the age, if you are a fan of Paddington then this stands beside it as an American version. Brilliant acting from some of the best actors.. Danny DeVito is brilliant.. and the naughty monkey...

Learning to fly

Another month, another live action remake of an animated Disney Movie. In this case, it's the elephant you'll believe that can fly. Dumbo. Directed by veteran individualist director Tim Burton. It's 1919, and Holt Farrier [Colin Farrell] returns from World War one to the circus where he worked with his family before the war. But times are changing. His wife is dead, and he has to bring up his son and daughter on his own. He can't do his old act because he's missing an arm.His daughter wants to be a scientist. The circus is struggling to keep going, as the ringmaster [Danny DeVito] knows full well. But when they have a new baby elephant, one with incredibly big ears and the ability to fly, opportunity knocks. Via an offer from an entrepreneur [Michael Keaton ] that might be too good to be true...A girl who wants to find her own path in life? Eek! It's female empowerment again! But it's not just about her. It's about an odd looking elephant. A trapeze artist [Eva Green] who has clawed her way up to find she's not quite at the top as she thought, a man looking for new purpose in life, and a man struggling to adapt to changing times. It's about empowerment for all of them. Learning to be who you are, and then you can take control of your life.Once you get this point, and it's easy to get it early on, this is a pretty emotionally engaging film and a nice watch as a result.Beautifully designed and directed as you would expect from a Burton movie, it gets past the short running time of the original by covering all that quickly, and then getting into the entrepreneur plotline. Some characters are thinly sketched. Colin Farrell does struggle to find much depth to his. But Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito are such good professionals as to be able to mine real depth in theirs. The cgi is decent. There's some very mild jeopardy, but you'd have to have a really whiny kid for them to be bothered by it. And it's just a very watchable spectacle, with a nice message to it all.A good bit of work from a reliable director. Definitely worth a watch. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish. It's also English audio described.Subtitles: English, Greek, Portuguese, Spanish. The disc begins with a few trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. They turn up in the sneak peeks section of the disc anyhow. And as ever with DVD's from Disney, there are no extras at all.

Flying High

You cannot compare this "live" action film to that of the original animation version. The story line here is slightly different and doesn't have any songs. It is a lovely heartwarming story. The scenes where Dumbo flies are quite brilliant and it is good to see the villains get their comeuppance. Special effects have come a long way from the early days and they are here on display. Enjoy it with the family, friends or just on your own.

Brilliant

Of all the live action movies I own, this is definitely the best one! It was amazing and I watched it on my own with no kids as they have all grown up and have families of their own!
