Finally got one

Through over 40 years working in different foundries, including my own, I've never seen anyone use a pyrometer. So many cold shuts, the occasional burn in, and other casting defects, could have been avoided with a device like this, that measures high temperatures. So glad the time has come for this technology to be affordable for small shops and individuals!

HoldPeak 1800 and 985C-APP work pretty well, with a few tweaks these would be great!

First off and right out of the gate (I have had them an hour), I bought both the HoldPeak 1800 and HoldPeak 985C-APP. The HP-1800 is off by +0.3 compared to my existing ThermoWorks unit (very VERY old LCD is fading and needed to replace it however since it is still very accurate I might just look for a new screen). The HP-985C-APP is off but within spec at +2.0 compared to the HP-1800. It would be great if there was a way to calibrate one unit to the other, but at +2.0 I am pretty happy. With all the negative statements about units being off at extremes I was very concerned. The reason I purchased the 2 different units was because I wanted the best chance of having three unique units to compare temperatures, and because I love a Smart Phone App. I am going to be mounting the HP-985C-APP to a ceiling and using the App to monitor temperatures on my work surface. I AM GOING TO BE USING THE APP, so of course I find a bug. If you have the Bluetooth connection active and use the App to toggle the laser markings, the App will not register the changes until you toggle the back-lighting. That ought to be an easy fix, then when you release the HP-1800-APP. As is, it was very easy to get working, but this is the first App I ever installed on my phone that did not come through Google Play for Android, so there was some serious nausea until it finally loaded and worked. My virus software said this app did not have a good reputation, but so far so good.Price wise, buying directly from HoldPeak you can save about $30, seriously. But given all the issues people have, I am not risking getting bad units or units calibrated further apart. Compared to all the other units out there, the HP-1800 has the second highest range compared to the "Perfect" competitor, but since they had 4 reviews, no stated warranty, and wrong images for the unit I wanted, I was not willing to risk it. All in all, I would have liked to save the $30, but since both units included 20% discounts on my next order, I will look at your other Smart Phone enabled products and make up some ground.I did not expected the included screw driver, nor the included case on the HP-985C-APP so I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, as in another review, the instructions are a little tough to understand and contain improper English. On the HP-985C-APP some mode settings will disable the Light and Laser On/Off features because the buttons get reassigned, that was difficult to understand given the instructions. So other than the price difference and the App not reporting the Laser state unless the back light is toggled, I am pretty impressed. Both units are hefty without being heavy, use the same plastic encasement, come with a 2 year warranty, and lifetime technical support. If anything changes I will let you know, but I would definitely recommend both units.

Use fresh battery

I bought this pyrometer and it seemed to work fine, then stopped working in less than an hour. I replaced the 9v battery, and it works again. Not sure if the sealed battery that came with the unit was old, or it just sucks power at an alarming rate, but time will tell. Either way, it seems to do the job.I can't confirm the accuracy, but it is in the neighborhood, which is close enough for my purposes. Getting a good reading on a small area takes practice, apparently. The sensor seems to read the average of an area rather than zeroing in on a point, so getting the temperature of a small object on an area that is not evenly heated may not even be possible. This pyrometer seems to do what it was designed to do, and it will measure the temperature of a pot of molten iron for under $30, so it is an excellent value overall.

Not very excited about this tool.

Ok, so shipping was pretty fast for this thermometer so that’s good. Now the not so good. The sensor only seems to ‘work’ about half the time when I use it; and by work I mean turn on and show a reading. When a reading does show up, it remains in Celsius despite my efforts to change this setting to Fahrenheit. The instructions included don’t really offer any help for this. Also, reading have regularly shown up inaccurately for me. When taking a reading in my house or of a piece of steel glowing red from being in my forge, the temperature reading will show up as 32 Fahrenheit (when I could get it to show me a reading in Fahrenheit) or 22 Celsius (when coming out of the forge), or 22 Celsius (when reading the temperature of my deck on a 42 degree (Fahrenheit) day).I’d really be hopeful that there is just a way to rest the device (I’ve tried removing the batteries) that would solve these problems for me, but I’ve reached out to the company via email a few times with no reply.I have seen a lot of really good reviews so maybe I’m doing something wrong, or maybe I just got a bad unit. I would like to have given more than one star, but with these issues and no reply to requests for customer support, I have to leave my rating where it is at this time.

You can spend more money if you want to but .....

I have an independent geology lab (ie gold prospecting) and continually melt ore samples to determine any degree of value in precious metals. The tasks must be as expedient an accurate as possible. You can't melt quartz and feldspar without knowing how hot the samples are getting. This device will measure up to 3,000F, which is sufficient when looking for gold and silver. If you are looking for platinum groups, you will need a device that measures temperatures above 3,000F.When using it, always make sure you extrapolate "distance" from the source and add about 50 degrees for every inch or so to what you are reading. There are other devices that are more expensive but, this device, for the price, this is the best value.

Good product, good price

Got no complaints. Performs as advertised. Arrived in time and we'll packed. I use to measure the temperature of my furnace so I can be sure my metal is at proper pouring temp.

Quit on last day to return!!!

Worked well until battery died and I replaced it. Then wouldn’t work again. And yes, it was a brand new battery!!

Well Designed

Normally I wouldn't take the time to comment on an item I've purchased, however this time I definitely want to!I have wanted one of these for a long time (as I melt metals in a forge). I could have bought the cheap thermometers with the thermocouples but didn't because of the issue of safety. Your unit keeps me at a safe distance and makes my work less stressful. The design is well thought out by someone who knows what data we need. Thank you so much and I will thank you every time I use it! Tom Oswald, USA

I thought it was broken, it wasn't.

The media could not be loaded.  At first I thought this thermometer was broken as it went to 990f or so and then showed 100 or more. Soon I realized that it only has 3 digits plus a .0So once you are over 999f it shows 100 to indicate 1000f. So my 150 reading was actually 1500f.Yes I am a man, and yes I am guilty of not reading the instructions. That is the main point here.I have a 2nd temp gun I used to confirm the accuracy of this and I am very impressed with its ability. Even at lot Temps it is accurate despite others saying theirs wasn't.So, to wrap up... I was just about to send this back when my smooth brain great a wrinkle and figured it out. It will now have a home in my tool box.

So far so good

Easy to use. It didn’t come with instructions? It is easy to figure out. My only question is. How close does it need to be to get a accurate temperature?

Happy with price and product

Works great so far, bought it to test the temperature of my forge but haven't lit it yet. Tested it out on my stove top. Read 575°C

not reliable at all

On RED HOT metal, i got a reading of 143 Farenheit!!!. I did many attempts, jus to be sure i use correctly the device...3 readings (on same spot with 1-2 seconds between the reading: 140, 850, 180 Farenheit. I compared the result with an other infrared thermometer and i got a difference of 30-100 degres (on same spot and in the same time. I DO NOT recommand it at all
