I live in Az.I need a hard start kit for a 30,000 btu 2.5 ton, which one do you recommend?
If there is an existing start capacitor, can you put this one in parallel with it or the run capacitor?
Can a hard start kit help an a/c compressor start when powered by a generator which more than satisfies the unit's FLA but is just shy of the LRA?
Is this pretty easy to install? Is it just removing two wires from the old capacitor and reattaching to the new hard start capacitor? Thanks.

Good addition to the system especially when you used a generator.

Works great.

Helps our 2.5 ton, a ton

I bought this a year ago to keep as a spare and recently since I was cleaning our 2.5 ton Goodman condenser I decided to just install it since everything was taken apart already. It's a simple install, just bolt the CAP to the unit next to the existing one, and then for our unit, connect it to the red and yellow terminals on the existing CAP.After reassembly, the first thing I noticed is that the condenser kicks on instantly now, before it would have a ramp-up of 15-20 seconds where it would slowly start up before getting to full speed. Now, that happens immediately. Highly recommend installing one of these.

Worked for me

Bought this capacitor not expecting much - cause its so cheap. Did not take long to get it, thanks Amazon! Bought a cheapo Generator (All Power America APG3012 3,250 Watt 6.5 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator - search for it on Amazon ) - and found that it could not start my RV/AC without some hysterics - literally the generator started to walk across the driveway trying to rev up enough to start the compressor on the A/C. IT would eventually kick in, but I wanted a better solution. Took about 15 minutes to put this capacitor on my 2002 Dometic 13.5K BTU A/C. Which did have a starting capacitor - bout 1/2 the size of this thing. I just wired it in parallel as there were lugs to do so on the original starting capacitor. And sure enough! The A/C compressor started, the Generator surged just a bit under the strain, then returned to normal speed - I base this on how it sounds - dont have a A/C volt meter. But worked very very well. I've run this combo for several hours to test the capacitor and the generator - no real issues other than if i run the A/C i can’t run really any other high amp device such as a microwave, but hey I didn't want to lug around a really heavy generator for camping and having some A/C while in the desert is fantastic. I should mention, that the Generator can start the A/C when it’s first turned on, but when the system pressurizes - that’s when the generator could not re-start the compressor easily. Now if there is at least 45 second between compressor cycles, this capacitor makes the next start of the compressor pretty painless without much struggle by the generator. I was told by someone that works on A/Cs that when the system is pressurized the compressor takes more power to start. For what its worth.

Does the job for RV with small generator.

I recently bought a motorhome with a 2500 watt generator. The previous owner did not have AC on it so it would fit in his garage (nine foot door). When rv dealer quoted me $1400 to install a new name AC, I elected to buy a 'basic' brand name Dometic 13,500 btu AC for $650. It was helpful that the RV was already wired and cut for the unit but the issue was whether the small gen would even run it. Many others had said it was really 'iffy' without installing a hard start kit. So I ordered and added this kit before I even put the new AC on the roof.Payoff - as soon as I hooked up the wiring, I fired up the gen let it run a few minutes and turned on the AC. Gen took it with only a typical added-load groan lasting a second or so.- Note: Lots of people complain that this 'start function' kit should be included from the factory. I believe the reason it is not is due to the likelihood that the relay in the kit will fail before anything else in the unit. I understand the electrical aspects and I'm pretty sure these will fail at n hours and long before anything else does.- Stars. Gave only 4 because it IS likely to fail at some point and because the better version - SPP6 E - is not designed to work reliably with 120 volt systems.

My breaker doesn't trip anymore

Great to have especially if you have an older unit that has trouble starting. Easy installation just wish it came with its own self-tapping mounting screw.

Works As Intended

This Hard Start Capacitor is just what older A/C Condensers need. It helps them spin up quicker and definitely extends the life of the compressor. For the price of the kit, as compared to the overwhelming price of a new HVAC unit, it is well worth the small price for the peace of mind of being able to keep your condenser unit running at it's peak performance for as long as possible. Great product and very affordable price. I'm satisfied.

Neautral feelings on this product.

It is possible that this product does what it says, but my father purchased and installed it on his Gemini 105Mc Catamaran's A/C with no noticeable change in power load. Meaning, it appears this capacitor didn't change anything. I purchased one and installed on our Hunter 37.5, also with no noticeable change. We both purchased because we had read that with this little gem we could start and run our marina a/c off of a Honda eu2000i generator, but that wasn't the case. The Honda eu2000i has the power capability to run the a/c, but not to get over the start surge. We ended up using an ammeter to measure the power surge reduction at startup using a Supco and only realized a 5 amp drop in the start surge. So this device will probably work for someone who has an old compressor, which only needs a slight boost to get it running, but still won't work for someone trying to start their a/c on a Honda 2000. Another device we tried is the Dometic SmartStart, which reliably starts our Mermaid 16,500 btu a/c each and every time with the Honda eu2000i on eco mode.
